Biography: Arul Bala

Mr Arul Bala completed his medical degree at the University of Western Australia and gained a broad experience in surgery before entering the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons neurosurgical training programme in 2006. Mr Bala spent a year in Wellington, New Zealand and two years at the Royal Alfred Hospital in Melbourne learning brain and spine surgery skills. Mr Bala is the first Surgical NeuroDiscovery Research Registrar and started with our group in February 2009. Arul Bala was awarded the prestigious Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Foundation for Surgery Scholarship and the Medtronic-Neurosurgical Society of Australasia Scholarship for his planned Masters project on the function of the the caudal zona incerta in Parkinson's disease and essential tremor. Mr Bala is pictured below on the right during deep brain stimulation surgery at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. In May 2010 Arul passed the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons as a neurosurgeon.
